It is abundant in insulin as well as the enzyme papain and can be synthesized from the amino acid phenylalanine in the body. It is also the precursor of several neurotransmitters, including L-dopa, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. It transmits nerve impulses to the brain and promotes the healthy functioning of the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands. Through its effect on neurotransmitters, it may affect several health conditions, including Parkinson's disease, depression, and other mood disorders.
